- The TV is the largest and most apically positioned valve and its functional anatomy, similar to the MV, can be divided into four components:1
- fibrous annulus
- three leaflets
- papillary muscles
- chordal attachments
- A normal annulus is triangular as well as saddle shaped. When functional dilatation occurs, the annulus becomes more circular and planar, dilating in the septal to lateral direction.1
- The TV is composed of 3 leaflets: the anterior, septal, and posterior leaflets, using standard nomenclature. However, pathologic assessment of the TV demonstrates a heterogeneous number of leaflets ranging from 2 to 5 or more leaflets. 2
